Malmö: torvet og kystenMalmö: the square and the coast

Sveriges tredjestørste by ligger tættest på kontinentet, og byen bruger afstanden.Sweden’s third city sits closest to the continent, and the city uses that distance.

Malmö grew up as a Scanian trading town and rebuilt itself in recent decades: Västra Hamnen, with Turning Torso, the 190 metre twisting tower of 2005, stands where the shipyard stood. Gamla Väster, the old quarter, keeps the small streets and the houses with brick gables.

Stortorget is the city’s large square with the rådhus, the city hall, and two steps away lies Lilla Torg, the small square with its timber-framed houses. Between them run the everyday streets, which look above all like a working town with shops, coffee and rows of bicycles.

Ud mod sundetToward the Sound

Down by the water lie Ribersborg and the kallbadhus, the open-air bath house on piles from the end of the nineteenth century, where swims alternate with the view across to Copenhagen. This coastline is Malmö’s raised hand toward the region: on clear days the bridge is visible the whole way.
