Sweden’s southernmost province is flatter, warmer and closer to the continent than the rest of the country.

From the foot of the bridge the fields run in long stretches: rapeseed in May, grain in August, windbreaks of beech between. Skåne is the country’s grain store, and the road from Malmö southeast runs through towns that live off the same agriculture the region feeds on.

The Oresund Bridge leaving the shore at Lernacken on the Swedish side
From Lernacken the bridge is seen leaving the fields and reaching across the Sound toward Denmark.

Byerne i landetThe towns inland

Lund, half an hour from Malmö, holds the cathedral and the university, the oldest in the Nordics. Helsingborg sits closest to the water, with the ferry across the narrow stretch to Helsingør. Ystad turns southeast, with timber framing and the ferries toward Bornholm. Each town carries a piece of the old east-coast culture, and all stand within an hour of the bridge.

The coast toward the east, Österlen, is the province’s low cape: beaches, apple orchards and towns of artists. It is not a day trip from Copenhagen in the same sense as Malmö, but it is another one, and the bridge makes it possible without an overnight stay in advance.
